Honeywell Vicks V9071 HEPA Nursery Air Purifier Review

Manul shows 3 filters: 'washable pre-filter', 'carbon filter' and 'hepa filter', yet only gives part number for washable pre-filter and hepa filter (which they confusingly suddenly call 'main filter').
Call Kaz - even more confused. Guy couldn't tell me what filters the unit needed, but he did know they were not in stock (whatever they were).
Easy to buy the air-purifier - hard to buy the filters.

Thermax Mini Max (Large) Water Based Air Purifier/Air Freshener Review

Thermax Mini Max (Large) Water Based Air Purifier/Air Freshener
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just bought one of these, and have had it running for two weeks now. Here is what you should know. First of all, it was fairly loud out of the box. But over the course of the first week, as the motor broke in, it became a little quieter each day. I was worried that it wasn't doing anything at first, because it really doesn't move much air. But it definately picks up a lot of crud out of the air. The 'clean' water will often become VERY cloudy over the course of 24 hours. The 'smell' addetives they include are not as critical as they make it sound. It cleans the air just fine with plain water. However, if I have company coming over, I may add a drop of the blue stuff just to help freshen up the room a little more.
I finally understand the weakness of a water-based air cleaner compared to the other types. The other ones you can just setup in some corner, and forget about it for weeks. That is not the case with this machine. Because water evaporates, you need to pay attention to this thing every day. Currently, the water goes down from the MAX line to the MIN line in about 24 hours, so I have to add or replace the water every day. I am also worried that this machine will not live very long. It seems cheaply constructed, and I am concerned it might stop working after a few months.
I bought it for a room in my house that honestly does not smell very good. I have tried cleaning it thoroughly, but that doesnt fix the problem. The smell does seem to have diminished quite a bit over these past two weeks that I have been running this machine.
I do recommend this to anyone who is looking for a low budget air cleaner, but with the understanding that you need to keep an eye on it's water level every day. Otherwise, don't bother buying it. It will not do you any good if all the water evaporates.
UPDATE July 2010: I have had this air cleaner running for about half a year now. It is still running. Although the noise level went down at first, it never comes close to being 'quiet'.
NEVER just add water to it. Always dump the water and put fresh water in. How this machine works is it sucks water up the small hole at the bottom of the spindle, and sprays it out the holes at the top of the spindle. The gunk it cleans out of the air will build up inside of the spindle. Eventually these dark clumps will break off and you will see them floating around inside the water, and they can plug up these small holes. You can reduce this problem by putting fresh water in each day insetad of adding water to dirty water.
Cleaning: The Spindle does NOT come apart, so cleaning the crud out isn't easy. I wouldn't recommend adding bleach or some other cleaning agent to the water. You wouldn't want poisonous stuff being spread into the air. I just do my best to clean the crud out of the spindle by blowing into the holes with an air compressor, or sticking small objects into the holes, like toothpicks or twist ties. It's not perfect, but thats about the best you can do without using chemicals.

This is the second one we've owned in 10 years (1st one died after several years of use). These units will quickly deodorize a small area, like a bathroom or closet. It's compact and simply "plug and play" to use. We even plug them into an extension cord and place them in the cars overnight once in a while to doedorize the cars' interiors.

I liked this so much I bought another. Now I have one in the bedroom and one in my work room - I sleep easier, and can work with paints and dusty materials without coughing and sneezing. My allergies have disappeared inside the house (now if the ragweed/pollen outside could just disappear...) The filters last a long time (6 months with continuous use) and I like the ionizer option - if you leave it on, the dust in the air falls to the floor in little balls you can sweep up. Overall, an excellent product with a nice slim line to it so it can fit anywhere.

Honeywell Tower Air Purifier Combo Pack Review

Honeywell Tower Air Purifier Combo Pack

I bought these two days ago. The smaller unit was for my bedroom and the larger one for my daughter's. She is a baby and has started rubbing her nose and eyes and is stuffy. So I bought these units in hopes of cleaning the air. In just two days I have noticed she is breathing easier.
A special note, the larger unit was loud. It had a high pitch kind of rattling sound. My husband pulled the filter out, messed with some wire or other and now it is whisper quiet, like the smaller one.
Good buy overall. A little pricey on Amazon but my daughter is sleeping easier which was the whole point.

Holmes HAP725-U 99.97% HEPA Air Purifier Review

Holmes HAP725-U 99.97% HEPA Air Purifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this item because I had been looking for a reasonably priced true HEPA room air filter with no ionizer. I have heard conflciting information on the safety of ionizers which produce ozone in the home so I did not want that feature, though it is popular right now. I have pet birds which are high dander and wanted to filter the air in the room the birds are in, both for my health and the birds' health.
I have been really happy with this product. The box says it is for a 16' x 16' room. I am using it in a 12' x 16' room and it seems to do the job. It is compact and is designed to sit on its end or on its side, whichever you prefer. It is beige and unobtrusive. The item is ready to go right out of the box - you just have to install the carbon filters (HEPA filters are pre-installed at the factory). Installing the filters is a snap. The air filter is simple to use. There is power button to turn it on and off and it has four operating speeds, 1 through 4. You can also set a timer function that allows you to set the filter to run for 1-16 hours and then automatically shut off. Impressively, the unit comes with a FIVE YEAR manuafacturer's warranty, something you don't see very often.
I researched HEPA air filters extensively before this purchase. Some HEPA filters cost $50-70 each to replace! This unit's filters are readily available in Wal Mart and Target. Amazon sells a two pack of HEPA filters for this unit that currently costs $32 and a four pack of carbon filters that costs $12. The manufacturer says that the HEPA filters will need changed every 6-12 months and the carbon filters every 3-6 months. Keep in mind that this unit uses two HEPA and two carbon filters. The unit also has indicator lights for each filter to tell you when they need changed. I'll probably spend $88 a year on the filters but that is much lower than for many other HEPA filters I looked at!
I run the unit on speed "3" for about 12 hours per day though you could run the unit continuously. It does a great job of circulating the air. Within the first day I noticed a marked improvement. I can't see very much dust in the air anymore, even in bright light (when you can see the floating dust particles in a room). Also, lots of the bits of feathers and fluff from the birds that used to float throughout the rest of the house are gone. The room did not have an obvious odor before but I really think the carbon filters have made the room smell "fresher."
The only drawback I can think of is that is it somewhat noisy at speeds 3 and 4 which are the most effective speeds. I don't consider this a problem because I am fond of white noise in the background. Some people might find it too noisy at the higher speeds.
Update November 2006: After five months of continuous use this filter stopped working in September 2006. I followed the instructions for returning the item for warranty service which required me to pay for return shipping and also pay to ship the item back. Within about a week Holmes had sent me a brand new filter that is actually a newer, larger, model worth more than the one that had failed. They gave me no hassle and replaced the filter with a better model. This new model is working fine so far. I am pretty pleased with Holmes prompt replacement.

LightAir IonFlow 50 Surface Air Purifier Review

LightAir IonFlow 50 Surface Air Purifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
According to the packaging and description, the LightFlow IonFlow 50 has some amazing new design that silently rids the air of dust, pollutants, and allergens. The claims of winning various awards, the sleek design, and the high price tag would all indicate a high quality product that helps with allergies and keeps homes cleaner. All indications are essentially wrong in this case, as the IonFlow 50 doesn't actually appear to do anything at all.
First off, there's a minor quibble with the instruction manual. For some reason the assembly instructions aren't linear and included in the same place, and require flipping between different sections. As an added annoyance, the plastic guard piece, which is the only part that requires any serious assembly, isn't even required for the device to function.
After several days of use in the living room and a few more in the bedroom, the air purifier hadn't done anything but use electricity. There was no noticeable change to the scent in the room, there was no dust gathered at the base of the device that was pulled from the air, and the air didn't feel any cleaner than it had before.
The IonFlow 50 does have a very attractive design however, and the lights are pretty nifty. Unfortunately that doesn't come even close to justifying the price tag, especially considering the instructions specifically warn against having the air purifier place within a foot of any furniture. Other than aesthetics, there's simply no upside here.

With its attractive, award-winning design, this air purifier delivers ideal results for people suffering from asthma, allergies, and respiratory problems, as well as those who simply care about the air quality of their home environment. The unit effectively eliminates more than 99 percent of the smallest airborne pollutant particles (size 0.01-1.0 microns)--including dust, smoke, pollen allergens, bacteria, viruses, fungus, mold, pet dander, and more--in less than five hours. It removes the smallest particles (nano particles below 0.1 microns), which cause the most severe health problems, but also larger particles (1.0-25.0 microns) at a reasonable rate. Plus, it does not lose effect over time as filter-based air purifiers do. The air purifier handles rooms up to 540 square feet, and it's built to work continuously. The easy-to-maintain, economical air purifier requires no expensive filters to change. Instead, simply dismount the collector once every two weeks or when needed and wash it clean in hot water and dishwashing liquid. Other highlights of this product include ozone-free silent operation (less than 5 dB), energy efficiency at only 7 watts per hour, and a discreet light in its transparent base, which can be switched off at any time. The air purifier measures 7 by 7 by 22 inches and carries a one-year warranty. From the ManufacturerLightAir IonFlow 50 LightAir IonFlow 50 delivers with an eye-catching beauty probably the healthiest air in the world. It offers an outstanding combination of efficient, silent, ozone free, energy saving, and easy to use, economical operation. LightAir IonFlow 50 boasts stylish looks, features, and performance. Research and development shows that LightAir IonFlow 50 in continuous operation is extremely effective at eliminating the smallest airborne pollution particles (nano particles below 0.1 micron). These particles normally represent around 90 percent of all particles in the air and are considered to cause the most severe health problems. And, a LightAir air purifier does not lose effect over time like filter-based air purifiers do. Unbeatable Advantages Documented Performance LightAir Ion Flow 50 reaches high performance levels. LightAir uses its unique and patented technology. Instead of moving air through a filtration system, LightAir literally removes harmful particles from the air in a room, trapping them in a collector. When necessary the collector can be easily and rapidly removed and cleaned in hot water--no repeated, costly filter replacement. Traditional electrostatic and mechanical filter air purifiers quite often present performance based on the airflow at the highest air speed at an unacceptable noise level. The independent test from the Swedish National Testing and Research Institute was carried out in a closed test chamber with a regulated supply of smoke particles and showed the remarkable result of effectively eliminating practically all airborne particles (size 0.3-1.0 micron) in less than five hours. Tests show that LightAir IonFlow 50 is extremely effective eliminating the smallest particles (nano particles below 0.1 micron) which cause the most severe health problems. The extraordinary performance of LightAir IonFlow 50 air purifier is mainly due to its ability to generate enormous volumes of electrons forming a corresponding quantity of negative ions. In fact it generates more than 250,000 ions per cubic centimeter measured at a distance of one meter. This is a level that probably no other ionizer has ever reached before without serious side effects and without generating any ozone. This large amount of negative ions balances out the overdose of positive ions in indoor air, a balance that is proven to be good for our health. Even more important is its capacity to distribute the negative charge throughout the room and collect particles which is directly related to the large production of negative ions. How It Works Extensive Reserach. Decades of Development. The engineers at LightAir have been doing research on ion generators in Sweden for more than 25 years. They have developed sophisticated applications that have been used all over the world at military facilities, in the casino industry, the fruit and vegetable industry, horseracing stables, hospitals, and many more situations. During the last 10 years, scientists at LightAir have been focusing on research using ionization in air purification for home and office environment, which have resulted in the unique patented LightAir IonFlow Technology Tests conducted by the Swedish National Testing and Research Institute prove that LightAir Ion Flow 50 air purifier effectively eliminates practically all airborne pollution particles (size 0.3-1.0 micron) in less than five hours without generating any ozone. FreshAir Surround High-Volume Ionic Air Purifier (Formerly Fresh Air 2.1) Review

FreshAir Surround High-Volume Ionic Air Purifier (Formerly Fresh Air 2.1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We live in a dusty place--agriculture nearby, windy conditions and a relatively dry climate mean constant dust. Plus we are in an area of high air pollution with coal-fired power plants. I find lots of dust in the house, and I know it makes me uncomfortable. We purchased the EcoQuest Fresh Air Purifier during a home show, and I find it lives up to its promises of cleaner air, though there is certainly a downside to using it (more about later.)
How it works
Some air purifiers work by filtering the air--they bring IN the air with a fan and blow it across a filter or precipitator to remove the dust. But the EcoQuest is different; it bombards the air with ions that make the dust fall down and break apart. While this sounds like science fiction, it is a well-known method of precipitating particles in many applications. Therefore, one EcoQuest works on a large area--in our case we use one for the main part of the house which is open plan and find it controls dust in the great room, the upstairs hallway and kitchen. (maybe a 1700 sq ft area.) When we need dust control in the bedrooms, we just move it in there. Normally, ours sits on the top of the stairs where it can reach the great room, hallways and kitchen.
This is the major advantage of the EcoQuest--since it doesn't rely on bringing air into it, you can position it to cover a large part of a house.
Appearance and Operation
The Ecoquest Fresh Air Purifier is a squarish box, black in front and with faux rosewood plastic on the side. I guess it is about as unobtrusive as you can get, not pretty but not ugly either. It is the size of four or five phone books standing on end. There is a front panel with lcd readout and press-membrane style controls.
The unit has an ultraviolet light that generates ozone and then inside, there is a plate of ceramic covered with a metal screen. This is the ion generator.
The fan has several speeds, from one to five, five being the loudest and fastest.
The UV lamp in our unit, with fairly constant use, has been in service for two years and has not shown any signs of burning out. So far, so good. You can choose settings based on the size of the area you wish to clean (small bedroom, car interior, large open room). We live in a pretty large open area, so we usually leave the unit on the 1750 sq ft setting.
You can choose how long to leave on the unit from 2,4, to 6 hours continuous operation, on high. This setting is for cleaning the house while you are gone. We choose to use this on days when the dust is getting to us, and we leave the house.
When we come home we notice:
1. The dust on the furniture is smaller in texture, and the carpets feel soft. The claim that the dust is broken down seems to be true.
2. We notice the lightning-struck smell of ozone. Some people find ozone a pleasant, fresh smell, but in large amounts, it is an irritant to me, and more than a little will give me a royal headache and makes me cough.
The Down Side
So, now, to the down side of the EcoQuest. The UV light generates ozone, and the ionizer plate apparently does as well. Ozone for many people, especially asthma suffers, is quite irritating. It's actually a toxic gas in large amounts. So one has to go cautiously with the EcoQuest and air out the house. Ozone is used by fire remediation to purify air after a disaster, and also to remove stubborn odors. It's a valid technique to purify air, as long as you remove the ozone afterwards. On its own, ozone is actually a pollutant. But it is a reactive type of molecule and breaks down, so getting rid of it is not difficult.
Maintenance
Monthly maintenance is required if you use the EcoQuest regularly or if the air is dirty. If you forget, a light goes on, indicating it's time to clean the ion generating plate. There is a ceramic plate inside you remove by unscrewing a back plate Then you vacuum off the plate and dust out the inside carefully. This takes us about 15 minutes.
Parts to replace would include the ceramic plate and the UV lamp. So far, in two years of constant use, we have not had to replace anything.
Summary
The EcoQuest lives up to its claim of reducing dust by breaking it down and by generating air-freshening ozone. However, too much ozone is a pollutant in itself. Therefore, you have to use it carefully and be mindful that if you cannot tolerate ozone, this may not be the purifier for you. As long as we don't crank up the ozone, we are quite happy with the unit. We have enjoyed good operating life with little maintenance so far.

New Therapure® Air Purifier with Uv Light and Permanent Hepa Type Filter
Average Reviews:

I am completely ecstatic with this air purifier.
Design: Very sleek design, with blue light up buttons.
Noise: Unless you can't even stand the hum from a laptop, this purifier is really quiet. Even on the highest setting, you can tune it out very easily. On the lowest setting, you can't hear it at all.
Quality: When we brought it home and hooked it up, we noticed it working almost immediately. We have an old heater, so it still has that musty smell whenever we turn it on, this got rid of the smell so fast. Also, we self-medicate, so this got rid of the smell so quickly-- our apartment smells so pleasant now, and the air feels so clean, I would definitely recommend this product.
Perks: No replacement filter, you simply clean the same one.
- Notification for Filter Cleaning
- replaceable UV light bulb, only needs to be replaced once a year.
- Stand-up design.

This product is an "ionizer/ozonizer". This is not revealed in product description. Owners manuel reveals the product produces an ozone output of less than 0.05 ppm/15 mg hr ozone gas. Manuel also reveals that people with respiratory problems should consult their physician before using this product. For more information go to [...]. "EPA does not recommend air cleaning devices that produce ozone gas for use in indoor occupied spaces. Ozone can cause health problems. Vendors often use misleading terms to describe ozone, such as "pure air" to suggest ozone is a healthy kind of oxygen. It is not. It is a toxic gas." I am allergic to dust and purchased this product believing it to be an ionizer. No where does the vendor mention that this product produces ozone that smells like clorox. I would rather breathe dust than ozone. I could not breathe the odor of clorox was so strong. I am returning this product for a refund.I would not have purchased it if the seller had mentioned ozone and possible health problems. Pure, clean, fresh air and water are odorless. They do not reek of chlorine or clorox. I recommend instead, SPT SF-15301 Mini Tower Fan with Ionizer, sold by Amazon. I returned this product and requested a refund for the product plus shipping in addition to $16.00 refund it cost me to return it to them. They met me half way, refunding product plus shipping, but not refunding what it cost me to return it.

With only 90 days of use, can only say 'so far ,so good'.
Pretty much as advertised(with the exception that it is fairly noisey.)
If you have need for ultra-violet germ fighting light(which you can turn off&on),washable ionic filter then this will fit your needs..
Considering its barreled/odd shape & rather large size, placement is a minor issue.Small complaint but assume necessary to design..
Be aware that is does deposit some dust etc.on adjacent walls.
However:Filter washes nicely..
Ease of maintenance.
Now if it gives long term service would say it deserves 5 stars.

Alen Paralda HEPA UV Air Purifier Review

Alen Paralda HEPA UV Air Purifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At the recommendation of my sister, who has bought the Paralda first - we purchased the air purifier for our home. My mother suffers from asthma and terrible allergies and lives with us - so anything we can do to make her more comfortable is worth it.
The Paralda is long and slender yet compact - it easily fit in our living room and didn't stick out like a sore thumb. It is very quiet and has varying speeds. It also had a UV lamp that zaps bacteria - and anything the HEPA air filter doesn't get. I noticed the air seemed fresher and there was less dust on the furniture. It felt like the pristine air you usually find in the dentist office - fresh, cleaner, very comfortable. The Paralda is not noisy at all compared to our Ionic Breeze air purifier we used to keep in my mother's bedroom. The control pad was very easy to figure out - even my mother could manage it on her own.
We have had the Paralda for several weeks now - and my mother seems to have more energy from sleeping better as a result of our cleaner air - which makes the price, to me, completely worth it. I must also mention - we run the Paralda all the time - and we have seem no marked increase in our electric bill ... it is a Energy Star rated appliance - and every little bit of savings helps us nowadays. I'd highly recommend this unit.

3Q Electrostatic Ionic Air Purifier Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought one of these about a year and 1/2 ago b/c it was cheaper then Sharper Images but was doubtful it would work well or for very long b/c it was cheaper.
I placed it in my bedroom when I got home from work and let it work it's magic, SILENT magic...it is really quiet!, while I sat in the living room. About 45 minutes later I decided to go check and make sure everything was going as it should. I turned the corner and the smell of fresh cool air hit me. It was SO nice! The only way I could describe the air is to say is smelled like mountain top air with a water fall near by. That's how fresh and clean it smelled.
Now, I'm thinking, "OK, it smells good, but is it really working?" I push a button and pull out the filter, yes, it's THAT easy, and I can see little fuzzies of cat hair (I have two) and dust (I have a lot) clinging to the filter! WOW! It actually was cleaning the air!
I promptly went out and bought them for every room in my house and I couldn't be happier.
There is one thing it does that some my consider bad but I like it. When the metal, re-usable filter is dirty and can't hold anymore, the unit tends to make a rattling sound when you turn it on. Nothing loud but once you wipe off the filter, and it really is easy to clean, it doesn't make the noise anymore.
I will always have these, or this brand, in my house. I run all four of my every night when I go to bed and I've had them for about a year and 1/2 and and they are still going strong! I love them!!!
